§4. Dukkha-nirodha-gāminī paṭipadā

Suffering's-cessation-way (of) practice 道

Idaṃ kho pana, bhikkhave, " this indeed, (and)-furthermore, monks, dukkha-nirodha- (is) suffering's-cessation-, -gāminī paṭipadā -leading-to-(it), (the) way-of-practice, ariya-saccaṃ— (as a) noble-truth: Ayameva ariyo aṭṭh-aṅgiko maggo, Precisely-this Noble Eight-fold Path, seyyathidaṃ— as follows- sammā-diṭṭhi sammā-saṅkappo Right view, right resolve, sammā-vācā sammā-kammanto sammā-ājīvo right speech, right action, right livelihood, sammā-vāyāmo sammā-sati sammā-samādhi. right effort, right mindfulness, right concentration.

* SN 56.11 ubho ante anupagamma both extremes, avoiding [them], majjhimā paṭipadā (the) middle way
* SN 45.8 (☸ 8aam) “ariyaṃ aṭṭhaṅgikaṃ maggaṃ / (the) noble Eightfold Path.
* in many suttas (☸ 8aam) simply referred to as maggo (path)

(Of) paths-,(the)-eight-fold (is the) best,
saccānaṃ caturo padā.
(of) truths, (the) four sayings.

Dis-passion (is the) best (of) dhammas,
dvi-padānañca cakkhumā.
(of the) two-footed, (the one with) eyes.

♦ es'-eva maggo n'-atth-añño,
This-(is the)-only path, {there is}-no-other,
dassanassa visuddhiyā.
(for) vision's purification.
♦ etañ-hi tumhe paṭi-pajjatha,
this-indeed you should-practice,
māras-setaṃ pamohanaṃ.
(for) Māra's-***** bewilderment.
