“dasay-ime, bhikkhave, dhammā
"(There are) ten-of-these, *********, things,
pabbajitena abhiṇhaṃ pacc-avekkhitabbā.
[a monk]-gone-forth frequently {should}-reflect-on (this).
katame dasa?
which ten?

(1. Ordained into casteless)

‘vevaṇṇiyamhi ajjh-upa-gato’ti
(1) 'casteless (I have) become.'
pabbajitena abhiṇhaṃ pacc-avekkhitabbaṃ;
[a monk]-gone-forth frequently {should}-reflect-on (this).

(2. Bound to others for livelihood)

‘para-paṭi-baddhā me jīvikā’ti
(2) '(to) Others,-****-bound (is) my life (to them).'
pabbajitena abhiṇhaṃ pacc-avekkhitabbaṃ;
[a monk]-gone-forth frequently {should}-reflect-on (this).

(3. Behavior should be different (than householders)

‘añño me ākappo karaṇīyo’ti
(3) 'different [than householders] (should) my behavior (be) conducted.
pabbajitena abhiṇhaṃ pacc-avekkhitabbaṃ;
[a monk]-gone-forth frequently {should}-reflect-on (this).

(4. Virtue blameless?)

‘kacci nu kho me attā sīlato
(4) 'is any thing (in) my self virtue
na upavadatī’ti
not blameable?'
pabbajitena abhiṇhaṃ pacc-avekkhitabbaṃ;

(5. The wise find my Virtue blameless?)

‘kacci nu kho maṃ
(5) 'is any thing (about) me,
anu-vicca viññū sa-brahmacārī
examined-carefully (by) wise companions-in-the-holy-life,
sīlato na upavadantī’ti
[find my] virtue (is) not blameable?'
pabbajitena abhiṇhaṃ pacc-avekkhitabbaṃ;
[a monk]-gone-forth frequently {should}-reflect-on (this).

(6. All that you love changes and leaves you)

‘sabbehi me piyehi manāpehi
'All ** (that is) dear (and) pleasing {to me},
nānā-bhāvo vinā-bhāvo’ti
different-(it)-becomes, separated-(from me it)-becomes.'
pabbajitena abhiṇhaṃ pacc-avekkhitabbaṃ;
[a monk]-gone-forth frequently {should}-reflect-on (this).

(7. I am the owner of my actions)

‘kamma-ssakomhi
'actions; -(I am the) owner (of them),
kamma-dāyādo
actions; -(I am the) heir (to them),
kamma-yoni
actions; -(are the)-vagina [I am born from],
kamma-bandhu
actions; -(are my)-relatives,
kamma-paṭisaraṇo,
actions; -(are my)-shelter.
yaṃ kammaṃ karissāmi
Whatever actions (I) do,
kalyāṇaṃ vā pāpakaṃ vā
good (or) evil **,
tassa dāyādo bhavissāmī’ti
(to) that, heir (to it I) will-become.
pabbajitena abhiṇhaṃ pacc-avekkhitabbaṃ;
[a monk]-gone-forth frequently {should}-reflect-on (this).

(8. Am I spending time wisely?)

‘kathaṃ-bhūtassa me rattin-divā
'what-becomes (of) me (as) nights-(and)-days
[thai: vītipatantīti] vītivattantī’ti
fly past?
pabbajitena abhiṇhaṃ pacc-avekkhitabbaṃ;
[a monk]-gone-forth frequently {should}-reflect-on (this).

(9. Do I enjoy empty dwellings?)

‘kacci nu kho ahaṃ
Do {I} not indeed ****,
suññ-āgāre abhi-ramāmī’ti
(in) empty-dwellings, exceedingly-enjoy (them)?
pabbajitena abhiṇhaṃ pacc-avekkhitabbaṃ;
[a monk]-gone-forth frequently {should}-reflect-on (this).

(10. Do I have something to show for this life?)

‘atthi nu kho me
'Is (there) not indeed (in) me,
uttari manussa-dhammo
(a) superior human-state,
alam-ariya-ñāṇa-dassana-viseso
(a) truly-noble-knowledge-(and)-vision-distinction
adhigato, yen-āhaṃ
attainment, on-account-of-which,-I,
pacchime kāle
(in my) final moments [of life],
sa-brahmacārī-hi
(when my)-companions-in-the-holy-life
puṭṭho
question-(me),
na maṅku bhavissāmī’ti
{I will not become} -confused,-ashamed,-despondent.'

these, indeed, monks,
